Best blogging app for KDE users?
I spent some hours of the last days searching for a nice application for blogging under linux or more specifically: KDE.
The blog “KDE blog posting client needed” pointed me to the kde kicker applet KBlogger by Christian Weilbach.
I gave it a try, and will briefely share my experiences with KBlogger with you. Maybe this helps the one or other person searching for a blogging application as i did.
After installing a suse 10 rpm of version 0.6.2 I tried to start it using Alt-F2 and typing in ‘kblogger’. Since it’s an applet for kicker, won’t find it neither in the kde menu nor somewhere in your PATH.
To connect to my wordpress blog i needed to configure my user and password, use the MetaWeblogAPI and the following URL http://blogs.lovelysystems.com/friessnegger/xmlrpc.php. KBlogger automatically set the BlogId to 1 after inserting the URL.

KBlogger’s interface is very simple. You can insert a title, choose a category (the existing categories on my blog where not available in the dropdown) and write and spellcheck your text.
When you submit your Post you can publish it immediately or submit it as a draft (you’ll need to activate the post using your blog’s webinterface later)
Formatting options are limited to bold and italic and you can insert links. I’m missing other formatting options such as headings, lists, preformatted text (for sourcecode listings) or an html source editor view.
KBlogger lists file uploading upon its featurelist in the handbook, but
i could not figure out how to upload or even insert an image.
Fazit
I’d like to submit this post using KBlogger, but for inserting images i’d have to use the webinterface again. For writing plaintext blogs KBlogger is a fast and easy to use tool. If you need to add sourcecode listings or images to your blog or need to do advanced html editing (eg. for syntax highlighting in sourcecode listings) to your posts KBlogger 0.6.2 is not what you are searching for.
It seems that atm there is no other native kde (qt) blogging application than KBlogger (any pointers welcome). I’d love the next release of Kontact to have some integrated blogging support.
You can find a list of other blogging clients you can use under linux on the Wordpress homepage.

I decided to use Performancing for writing my blogs. It is a firefox extension and has lot’s of features such as
- support for multiple blogs
- html source editing
- an integrated ftp client for uploading images and files
- draft section (nots) that let’s you work on multiple posts in parallel
- live previews
- technorati tags
- trackback urls and pings
- del.icio.us integration (to bookmark your posts using the same tags when submitting them)
See the handbook for more information how to use or get started with the Performanincing FF extension.
